Quiz Fiend's 50th Post!

Yes, it's true. Counting one article currently in the works, this is my 50th post since I began this blog in July and still going strong. This post concerns my trial of a new quiz on Wednesday, and there is some good news in that I will soon be able to write up the results of our quiz performance on Thursday (expect that probably tomorrow). This also marks my first solo outing since beginning the blog, and whilst I didn't win, if you had answered ANY of these questions correctly you would have put us in a tiebreak for first place, and any two would have meant a victory for us. Post Match Analysis

 

I couldn't really be dissatisfied with this performance, but it is a bit gutting to get so close. Here is the standard forensic dissection.

 

1) I had a vague recollection of reading this earlier in the week, but it could have been anywhere. I also had assumed it was in the UK and with little certainty, went for Gatwick.

Fact File: The planes were Boeing 737s, both owned by Ryanair, with one bound for Edinburgh and the other for Charleroi (Belgium). No one was hurt, but one of the planes broke a winglet. 

 

2) I'm not much help in a sports situation, though it did cross my mind that the photo might have been of a boxer. However, the picture came with the clue that he was a 'Saint', and given that I hadn't heard anything about Bruno in the news, I decided to go with Michael Jordan. I was a bit annoyed with myself at this mistake, but it was cancelled out by guessing cricketer Kevin Pietersen correctly in the next picture.

Fact File: Franklin Roy Bruno was born in 1961 in Hammersmith, and grew up across the Thames in Wandsworth. Taking up professional boxing in 1982, Bruno managed an impressive 40 wins out of 45 fights, ending 38 of these with a knockout. Bruno became the WBC Heavyweight World Champion on beating American Oliver McCall in 1995. His final fight was against Mike Tyson in 1996, who took the title from Bruno. Bruno was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in the mid 2000s and the reason for his 'Saint' label is that he has been talking about how to improve general mental health for World Mental Health Day which was on Friday 10th October. 

 

3) I knew that I recognised the woman in question, but I couldn't think where from. The photo used at the quiz didn't remind me of Mel B at all, and I was swayed away from the idea that the picture was of anybody to do with the X Factor, since Simon Cowell also appeared on the picture sheet. I usually rely totally on others for this feature of popular culture, it's definitely not my forte.

Fact File: Melanie Janine Brown was born in Leeds in 1975. After performing 'The Greatest Love Of All' at an audition for a new band, Brown became part of the pop phenomenon, The Spice Girls, in 1994, which became the best selling girl group of all time. She has 3 children, Phoenix Chi (with Jimmy Gulzar), Angel Iris (with Eddie Murphy) and Madison with her current husband Stephen Belafonte. Prior to joining the Spice Girls, she appeared as Amy Nelson on Coronation Street, but is now better known for her work on reality TV, especially her role as a judge on the UK version of the X Factor.
  

4) Another classic to add to the must see bucket. It really is sheer laziness on my part because this film comes up time and time again in quizzes, so I have no one to blame but myself. I was relatively certain that the answer was Kilgore, but this is the name of the Air Cavalry Regiment commander played by Robert Duvall.
Fact File: Apocalypse Now was directed by Francis Ford Coppola and stars Martin Sheen as Captain Benjamin Willard, Robert Duvall as Lieutenant Colonel William Kilgore and (you guessed it) Marlon Brando as Colonel Walter Kurtz. The film is set during the Vietnam War and is based in part on 'Heart of Darkness' by Joseph Conrad (with a significant change of setting). Willard and Kilgore are tasked with the assassination of the dangerous (and presumed mentally ill) defector Kurtz. The film was nominated for Best Picture in 1980, but lost out to Kramer vs Kramer, winning Best Cinematography and Best Sound. Sheen notably suffered a heart attack during the making of the film, which was most likely due to his heavy drinking.    

 

 5) I hadn't heard the quote ascribed to Adams, it just seemed to me the sort of thing he might have said, though a friend of mine who is also a fan begs to differ. I didn't know much about Asimov, so I decided not to risk it.
Fact File: Isaak Yudovich Osimov was born in Petrovichi, in the Russian Socialist Federalist Soviet Republic, probably in 1919. Asimov attained recognition as a professor of biochemistry at Boston University. He is much better known for being one of the 'Big Three' authors of the 'Golden Age of Science Fiction' (along with Arthur C Clarke and Robert A Heinlein), and his works or particular significance are the Foundation, Galactic Empire and Robot series (the latter of which includes I, Robot). As well as being vice president of Mensa International, Asimov notably has written published works spanning 9 out of the 10 categories of the Dewey Decimal System. He died in New York in 1992.  

 

6) This was probably the most irritating question of the night as I kept zigzagging between Edward and John. I ignored my instinct to change my answer and the rest is history.
Fact File: Born in 1917 in Cheraw, South Carolina, John Birks Gillespie is widely regarded as one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time. Primarily known for playing the trumpet, he was also a scat singer, and is regarded as a pioneer of the Bebop style. Gillespie died in Englewood, New Jersey in 1993. You can see a clip of him performing here.  

 

 7) I was certain that the answer to this was Jermaine Jackson, but to be honest, I'm glad that my knowledge of Big Brother is not particularly extensive.
Fact File: La Toya appeared on the sixth celebrity series of the show and was voted out fourth, The eventual winner of the series was Ulrika Jonsson. Her older brother Jermaine appeared 2 years previously on series 5. He fared rather better, becoming the runner up to Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty. 

 

8) The Bee Gees didn't even cross my mind. I thought I knew quite a lot about them, but I'd never heard of 'Alone', and to be frank I was a little surprised that the band were still charting so well in the late 90s. Their last ever UK Top 10 was 'Immortality' in 1998 where they accompanied Celine Dion. My total stab in the dark here was 'Boyzone' but I suspected that they were still popular past that date.
Fact File: The Bee Gees were composed of brothers Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb. They were originally active from 1958 to 2003 (after the death of Maurice), though Barry and Robin did reform from 2009 to 2012, until Robin's death. The brothers were born on the Isle of Man and spent time growing up in Manchester and in Queensland, Australia where they first found success. They later returned to the UK and first hit the charts with 'New York Mining Disaster 1941' reaching #12. Over their career, the brothers scored 5 UK No 1 singles and 9 in the US, as well as many more worldwide and for many they are synonymous with the disco era. They are thought to have sold over 120 million records in total. They are also one of the most prolific song writing teams in the world. Andy Gibb, the fourth brother, was also a successful musician in his own right.

9) I did consider Oasis, but I made the fatal mistake of thinking that Boyzone contained a pair of brothers. For this reason, I opted for the Chemical Brothers (made up of Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons), which I considered could be the Odd One Out for reasons of irony.
Fact File: Formed in Manchester in 1991, Noel Gallagher would later join his brother Liam in the band and would become major players in the Britpop era of the 1990s. Bursting onto the scene with their album Definitely Maybe in 1994, the band would go on to achieve 8 UK No 1 singles and to see all 7 of their studio albums reach the top of the charts. After experiencing irreconcilable differences following their final album, Noel left to form Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds and Liam to form Beady Eye. The band's 1995 album '(What's the Story) Morning Glory?' is the fifth best selling album in UK chart history.
 
10) I did spot the connection, (sort of) but I picked the wrong option. I'm not too unhappy with this, as the only one of these I knew for certain was the Kinks.

A Resounding Return To Form!

Once again, our Thursday outing was sadly undeliverable. On discovering that everybody else in the pub was there to watch the England vs San Marino game, we left for a completely different type of experience. We entered a quiz played using Android devices, in which we came second, so it wasn't such a catastrophe after all! We probably lost out on not being able to press the phone buttons fast enough, as several points we scored on the basis of being the first team to press. It was great fun to try, but we'll attempt to return to business as (sort of) usual next Thursday. Post Match Analysis

1) We ruled out the £50 fine on the grounds that we thought this was a little too much to expect a 14 year old to stump up (especially on the spot!). I've been to Jersey before and given that I knew there are only around 100000 inhabitants of the island, I thought maybe the year long ban was enforceable.
Fact File: Jersey is the largest of the Channel Islands and is a crown dependency of the UK, which means that it has a high degree of self government, though the UK manages its foreign and defence affairs. It is therefore not part of the UK. This helmet law is the first of its kind in the British Isles.

2) I hadn't seen it, but I had glimpsed part of a round up of the previous year in which at least one of the finalists made a wedding cake, so I thought this might be a regular challenge.
Fact File: The Great British Bake Off (GBBO) began in 2010 and is judged by Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood and presented by Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins. As part of the final round, the 3 contestants were asked to make two different versions of Viennoiserie (Viennese style baked products) in a 'Signature' round, 12 Victoria sandwiches, tartes au citron and scones in the Technical Round and a 'Showstopper' in the form of a piece montee. Birtwhistle's Red Windmill cake was based on the famous Moulin Rouge cabaret in Paris. She beat Luis Troyano and series favourite Richard Burr to become the show's fifth winner.

3) I remembered this story vaguely from a couple of months ago, but it is mildly outrageous to call this question 'news'. We went for 'bad breath'.
Fact File: 27 year old Medhi claims that he 'covered himself with Dior perfume' before boarding the flight. He has since filed a discrimination complaint with the airline. The flight he was supposed to take was from Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris to Dallas, Texas.    

4) Our memories failed us on this one, and I have reason to believe that the Captain did go by the name 'John' (his middle name), but I will have to check this later.
Fact File: Edward John Smith was born in Hanley (now part of Stoke-on-Trent) in 1850. He was (the Titanic aside) regarded as a safe pair of hands and became known as the 'Millionaire's Captain' as the very wealthy felt secure with him at the helm. A statue was build at Lichfield in his honour.

5) Yet another delightful factoid that was just plain wrong. Questions like this can cost you the win! (But not on this occasion.)
Fact File: Alaska joined the Union on January 3rd 1959 and Hawaii was admitted on August 21st.

6 & 7) I don't really watch the Muppets (spectacularly failing to go and see the Muppets film in 2011), but I was really pleased with myself on the picture round. I managed 8 on limited knowledge, and only tripped up by mixing the names of these two gentlemen.
Fact File: Statler and Waldorf have featured in The Muppet Show since its beginnings in 1976. They are best known for heckling other members of the cast. The pairing became popular enough to have their own internet show on Movies.com from 2005 to 2006, in which they would discuss movies. They are both named after famous New York hotels - Statler after the Statler Hilton and Waldorf after the Waldorf-Astoria (with Waldorf's wife's name being Astoria).

8) I try with starsigns, but I have been known to foul them up. I was sure on this one, but I often get confused with where to place Leo and Libra.
Fact File: Leo is the 5th sign of the Zodiac and based on a lion. The symbol for the lion is, according to Wikipedia, based on the Nemean Lion (which was slain by Hercules as part of his 12 Labours). Leo is a Fire sign and usually spans July 23rd to August 21st.

9) I wouldn't have remembered this, though I had heard it before. Going by what we knew of the quiz from last week, we thought this might be a trick question and went with 'den' on the off chance.
Fact File: Foxes are part of the dog family (canidae) and are apparently found on every continent except Antarctica. An 'earth' can also refer to a group of foxes, but the term 'skulk' is more typically used. You can read a brief foxy lowdown here...

10) At the last minute I put down 'beagle', but the team did suggest that he might be a hound. It was partly due to time pressure.
Fact File: Pluto was first introduced in the Walt Disney Productions cartoon 'Chain Gang' in 1930, and was briefly known as 'Rover'. Along with Minnie Mouse, Donald and Daisy Duck, Goofy and his owner Mickey, Pluto is one of the 'Sensational Six'. He first received his own series of cartoons in 1937.

11) I had never heard this song before, so I was next to useless with this one. At least it wasn't played in slow motion this week...
Fact File We Are the In Crowd are a pop punk band formed in Poughkeepsie, New York. The band are notable for suffering in 2009 from an ex band member hacking their Myspace page and deleting sensitive data. 'The Best Thing' was released in 2013 and is taken from their second album 'Weird Kids'.


12) Ditto, although I had heard of the band. Music wasn't too bad for us this week, but far from a highlight (as usual).
Fact File: The All-American Rejects are a rock band from Stillwater, Oklahoma who burst onto the music scene with their self titled debut album in 2003. They are probably best known for the 2008 song 'Gives You Hell' and have sold over 10 million records worldwide. 'Beekeeper's Daughter' was released in 2012 and is taken from their fourth album 'Kids In the Street'.

Hi all, I'm back. I'm afraid that once again, I don't have too long to research this post, chiefly for the reason that our performance on Sunday was absolutely abysmal. A bad performance on the news round, a sub par movie quotes round and the inclusion of a whole round on Glastonbury left us without a chance at winning the cash (a princely £200), but I still feel that I let myself down on this one. Analysis and Excuses

1) Our first of many incorrect multiple choice answers. Sometimes every guess you make is the wrong one. Sunday was one of those days. The tragic answer to this question is actually quite logical, and at the risk of sounding all soppy, all the best to Whisper in finding a decent home.
Fact File: Whisper is 6 years old and came to the Old Windsor branch of the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in January. According to Wikipedia, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is the fifth most popular breed of dog in the UK.

2) We went with world's smallest piece of jewellery on a hunch. My excuse for missing this story is that it must have got lost in the outpouring of news on the recent Hong Kong democracy protests.
Fact File: Wallace Chan invented the 'Wallace Cut' in 1987. His most recent piece of work is the representation of the faces of the Greek goddesses of the Seasons, the Horae. He does make ants as well however. You can watch more here.

3) Apparently Green was on the receiving end of verbal abuse whilst hosting the university's Fresher's Ball. We put, with misgivings, that he announced that he and wife Millie Mackintosh were having a baby.
Fact File: Professor Green was born Stephen Manderson in Hackney in 1983. He rose to prominence after winning the original 'JumpOff MySpace' rap tournament in 2008. Green first charted in 2010 with singer Ed Drewett on the song 'Need You Tonight', which reached No. 3. He is currently in the charts with 'Lullaby' featuring Tori Kelly, which is featured on his 3rd album 'Growing Up In Public'. He married Made In Chelsea star Mackintosh in 2013.

4) I had read about this, but almost immediately forgot about it. Hopefully before long, this will no longer be a news item.
Fact File: The 'Fappening', for those of you who are unaware, refers to the many private celebrity photos that have been stolen from Apple's 'iCloud' service and posted on the website 4chan, specifically the ones containing nudity. The first man to have nude images of himself posted is Nick Hogan, son of the famous wrestler Hulk Hogan. If you want to know why it is called the 'Fappening', then I am sure that Urban Dictionary will be able to tell you.




5) Affleck crossed my mind, but I think I was too easily swayed by the wording of the question (which led me to think it was a Best Actor winner) when really I should have looked at it a bit harder and applied deductive reasoning. I can't remember what we put for this question but it might have been Tom Hanks. Affleck is also promoting his new film, Gone Girl, which presumably explains why he was on the talk show in the first place.
Fact File: Affleck was born Benjamin Affleck-Bolt in 1972 in Berkeley, California. He rose to prominence in 1997 for co-writing Good Will Hunting with Matt Damon, for which the pair won the Best Original Screenplay Oscar. He is well known for his roles in Chasing Amy and Pearl Harbor, and for directing Gone Baby Gone and the Best Picture winning Argo. Affleck married fellow actor Jennifer Garner in 2005, is the brother of Casey Affleck and is due to star as the next Batman in 2016.

6) Predictably I had no idea on sport, and a question about Australian Rugby League was so far out of my comfort zone that I knew this point was more or less a write off. I pressed for the notion that he was sent off, which would have been suitably anticlimactic, but the truth isn't a bad story in itself! Burgess played for the full match with his injuries, and has earned his place in the sport's history books.
Fact File: Sam Burgess was born in 1988 in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire. He had previously played for the Bradford Bulls from 2006 to 2009, as well as the UK national sides (England and Great Britain), and was persuaded to join the South Sydney Rabbitohs in 2010. Burgess' last game was crucial, securing the Rabbitohs their first Premiership title since 1971. He has now switched from Rugby League to Rugby Union, playing in the Aviva Premiership for the English club Bath.

Glastonbury Round

Fact File: Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts was originally held in 1970 when it was known as the Pilton Pop, Blues and Folk Festival. It has always been hosted semi-regularly on Michael Eavis' Worthy Farm and it is now the largest greenfield festival in the world, thought to be attended by around 175000 people on each occasion. Eavis was inspired to create the festival after watching an open air Led Zeppelin concert earlier in the same year. It was originally headlined by 70s glam rock giants T. Rex and the first group to perform was the progressive rock band Stackridge. This round was inspired after tickets for the 2015 festival sold out in record time.

7) My thought was £2, but I gave into the team's consensus of £5. It doesn't matter if it's still wrong. Having neither lived through nor studied prices before decimalisation I was pretty much out of my depth here.
Fact File: 1970 was 1 year before the UK made the conversion to decimal currency, hinting that we should have been erring on the low side. The 2015 tickets retailed at £225.

8) We thought this might be a fiendish question where the answer was much later than you would have thought likely. Not so, unfortunately for us. The date is not as late as it initially seems either, as the festival was only held 4 times over the 1970s.
Fact File: The first proper toilets were introduced in 1983. There are now usually over 4000 portable toilets in use, and a significant reason that Michael Eavis chose not to hold the festival in 2012 was because of the expected shortage of toilets thank to the London Olympics.

9) Foiled again. I should have been on the lookout for this, but I'm still getting used to the Duck and Scholar quiz.
Fact File: It is actually illegal to get married at the festival, but plenty of people have proposed such as this gentleman in 2013.

10) This was an unexpected miss. I opted for cider, given the Somerset location of the festival.

11) I think we went for 700 acres. Classic example of our not being able to squeak a guess.
Fact File: 900 acres equates to around 3600 square metres.

12) Deja vu. This probably explains the free milk at the first festival. We went with sheep.

13) Probably should have got this, but we didn't have the time to think it through and inevitably went the wrong way. I can't find a specific date for the birth of the sport, but the festival's reputation for getting people caked in mud means that this is hardly a massive surprise.

14) 29 minutes is the general consensus figure I can find, despite an earlier link to a Guardian article. I forgot to write this down, but I would have been out by one minute. I think that basically sums up our performance in this quiz.
Fact File: 29 minutes smashes 2014's record of 1 hour 27 minutes which was headlined by Arcade Fire, Kasabian and Metallica.

15) We said Airplane, and in the flurry to get something down on paper at the end of the quiz, forgot all about it. A very bad miss.
Fact File: Airplane! was released in 1980 and stars Robert Hays, Julie Hagerty and Leslie Nielsen. The fast-paced comedy was voted the second best comedy film of all time in 2006, after Monty Python's Life of Brian. The quote is uttered by First Jive Dude, who is speaking to Second Jive Dude.

16) I hadn't seen this film, so at least this one wasn't an annoyance.
Fact File: Full Metal Jacket is a 1987 film directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Matthew Modine, Adam Baldwin, Vincent D'Onofrio and R. Lee Ermey. The film is set during the Vietnam War and the term 'full metal jacket' refers to the bullets that the troops used. The quote is shouted by Gunnery Sergeant Hartman at Private Davis in this scene.

17) Another easy one that foxed us. When you are certain you've heard a quote, but can't place it, it is the most frustrating feeling. Hardly a unique experience on Sunday though...
Fact File: Toy Story is a 1995 film directed by John Lasseter and starring Tom Hanks as Woody and Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear. It is the first full length computer animated movie and thrust Pixar Animation Studios into the spotlight. It has spawned two critically acclaimed sequels and is probably one of the most iconic films ever made. Buzz says this to an exasperated Woody, who is trying to convince Buzz that he is not a real superhero.

18) Should I be worried that this film has passed me by? Perhaps not.
Fact File: Mean Girls was released in 2004 and was directed by Mark Waters and written by Tina Fey. It stars Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried and Lacey Chabert. It is partly based on the book Queen Bees and Wannabes. The quote is gleefully yelled by the character Jason as two girls take part in a catfight.

19) Should have got this one, but panic had set in by this stage.
Fact File: Pulp Fiction is a 1994 film starring John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson and Uma Thurman and is probably director Quentin Tarantino's most celebrated film. The film won Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars and the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. The quote is said by the gangster Marsellus Wallace, who is played by Ving Rhames.

20) Happily we got most of the picture rounds though this one irritated my teammates.
Fact File: Also known as 'Army of Darkness', Evil Dead 3 is part of a franchise directed by Sam Raimi and stars Bruce Campbell and Embeth Davitz. It was released in 1992.

21) I hadn't seen this one either. What more can I say?
Fact File: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was released in 2004, was directed by Michel Gondry and starred Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet. The central premise of the film is that a couple who have drifted apart from one another are erased from each others' memories.

22 & 23) Just ugh! I quite like the Aunt Joanna one, but since I hadn't heard it on Only Fools and Horses, I had no chance.
Fact File: Cockney rhyming slang is thought to have originated in London's East End in the 1840s and may have been developed by criminals in order to communicate without being as easily incriminated by the Metropolitan Police.
