Odd One Out Quiz

I won't have the time to do too many original quizzes over the next couple of months, but I thought I'd base one on one of my favourite formats - the Odd One Out. Coincidentally, Have I Got News For You is returning  to TV soon, so I may try and do a news themed 'OOO' in future if this one is well received. Here are 5 questions, and if you're playing along competitively you can get one point for a correct answer, and one for the correct reason. The answers and reasons are given separately, so if you're struggling you can check which is the Odd One and try and work out why, should you wish. Please let me know what you think, either comment or tweet me at @MPRTaylor.

Answers

1) D - Queen Victoria
2) B - Gemma Arterton
3) C - Mariam Ibrahim
4) D - Captain James Cook
5) A - The cruise liner

Reasons are given below.

Reasons

1) They were all born with the first name 'Victoria' except for Queen Victoria whose first name was Alexandrina. Posh Spice was born Victoria Adams, Pixie Lott is really Victoria Lott and Little Boots' real name is Victoria Hesketh.

2) They all lost parts of their fingers in various accidents except for Gemma Arterton, who had an extra finger on each hand surgically removed when she was very young. A 17 year old Iommi lost the tips of two of his fingers while working in a sheet metal factory, Bale lost the tip of his in a dirt-bike incident and Frodo had most of his finger bitten off by the wraith like Gollum in a desperate bid to seize the One Ring.

3) They are all notable converts to Islam, except Mariam Ibrahim who was judged by a Sudanese court to have converted to Christianity, due to her father being a Muslim. She was deemed to have committed apostasy, which meant that she was condemned to death, but intense international pressure eventually resulted in her release. Stevens changed his name to Yusuf Islam on conversion, and Ali changed his from Cassius Clay. Jackson believes that his brother, King of Pop Michael Jackson, was also on the edge of conversion before his death.

4) They were all born in Hawaii, except for James Cook who died there in 1779. Cook was the first Westerner to discover the Hawaiian islands, which he named the Sandwich Islands. He was killed by a mob of natives on his third visit to the islands, in Kealakekua Bay.

5) They have all been the subject of negativity towards the European flag, except for the cruise liner, which was ordered to lower the British Red Ensign before it could dock in Argentina. The disputed Falkland Islands are still a source of much hostility between Argentina and the UK. The police were called to investigate at the house in Holywood after a complaint that it was flying 'an Arabic flag' which is a pretty astonishing mix-up, though flag flying in Northern Ireland is another contentious issue. A makeshift European flag was burned by an unidentified woman at the Conservative Party Conference this week, and the UK government has refused to fly the European flag outside 10 Downing Street and other official buildings since 2011, presumably due to divided feeling in the Conservative Party towards Europe.

So those are your five. How did you find them? Don't hesitate to let me know, and please tell me how you did as well. If you enjoyed these then I'll try and think of some more in due course. See you soon everyone!
