US Currency Quiz Guide (Coins)

Just in case US currency should rear its head again, here is a cheat sheet I've prepared for quick future reference. No images at the moment unfortunately, hopefully one day I'll trust myself with putting pictures into this blog. Only coins currently in circulation are included. Reverse refers to the reverse currently being minted.

I will follow this post with one on the various notes shortly. Obverses in bold also feature on U.S. banknotes.

Coins

Penny
Value: 1 cent
Colour: Bronze
Obverse: Abraham Lincoln, 16th President (1861-1865)
Known for: Victory in the U.S. Civil War, abolishing slavery, Gettysburg Address
Reverse: Union Shield
Info: In 2013, it cost the U.S. mint 1.83 cents to create one 1 cent coin

Nickel
Value: 5 cents
Colour: Silver
Obverse: Thomas Jefferson, 3rd President (1801-1809)
Known for: Chief architect of the Declaration of Independence, Louisiana Purchase
Reverse: Monticello (Jefferson's Virginia home)
Info: Similarly, as of  2013, it cost the U.S. mint over 9 cents to produce a nickel

Dime
Value: 10 cents
Colour: Silver
Obverse: Franklin D. Roosevelt, 32nd President (1933-1945)
Known for: New Deal Coalition, U.S. entry to World War II, longest serving U.S. President
Reverse: (Left to right) An olive branch, a torch and an oak branch
Info: The dime is currently the smallest U.S. coin in circulation

Quarter
Value: 25 cents
Colour: Silver
Obverse: George Washington, 1st President (1789-1797)
Known for: Victorious Commander-in-Chief of U.S. forces during American Revolution
Reverse: America the Beautiful national parks/sites

Half Dollar
Value: 50 cents
Colour: Silver
Obverse: John F. Kennedy, 35th President (1961-1963)
Known for: Bay of Pigs Invasion, Cuban Missile Crisis, affair with Marilyn Monroe
Reverse: Presidential seal
Info: Most vending machines and payphones do not accept half dollars

Dollar
Value: $1
Colour: Gold
Obverse: Sacagawea and her child, Jean Baptiste Charbonneau
Known for: Native American interpreter and guide during the Lewis and Clark expedition
Reverse: Native American themes
Info: The dollar coin also currently features profiles of deceased Presidents, which are mainly seen as collectors items
